What will the kit copy? What won't it copy? You'll be able to copy all your own homemade videos and most things recorded from TV (although legally speaking you shouldn't keep those programmes longer than 7 days). Each shop bought video we tried converted fine (Ivor The Engine, The Clangers, and the Bond movie Goldeneye)
Anything else you have, on what looks like a regular blank tape, should be transferable.

How easy is it to use? Just plug the Scart adapter into the back of your VHS video player, attach the yellow, red & white lead, connect the USB capture device to the Scart lead, install software from the CD, finally plug the USB adapter into your PC. Then capture, author & burn. Ulead Videostudio is also a fully fledged video editing application.

Technical info : The software supports PAL (UK/Europe) & NTSC (USA) devices. Both S-Video and Composite video inputs are supported by both hardware and software (we supply a composite lead). Even and odd fields are combined into single frames that can be captured at full frame rates for the applicable standard (VHS Upscaling). The maximum supported frame size is: PAL (UK & Europe) 720 x 576 (DVD quality) @ 25fps / NTSC (USA) 720 x 480 @ 30fps. Our kit has been tested with 32 & 64 bit versions of Windows 7, Vista & XP. Captures video & audio over USB2 (older USB1 is too slow) to a standard MPEG2 or AVI file. In addition to standard PAL & NTSC modes, £33.90 version can also record from PAL50, PAL60 & NTSC_433 sources in colour (Microsoft Xbox360 & NTSC VHS on UK VCR with NTSC playback). Our USB adapter performs Time Base Correction - which means even if your 1980s wedding video has gone all wobbly & wavy our adapter will still capture what remains, providing it plays back on a TV okay.

In addition to the USB adapter, we send a two metre yellow/red/white phono lead PLUS a Scart adapter - this means you can connect all Scart equipped VHS & Super VHS VCRs and older VHS-C, Hi8, Video 8, Sony 8MM & Mini-DV Camcorders. Even older pre-Scart VHS and Betamax players can be attached (see Attaching Cables PDF Guide and just ask if you need the free BNC adapter).
You can also connect more modern equipment, such as Freeview, satellite and cable TV hard drive recorders and camcorders with DVD or memory cards - basically, anything that can be connected to a TV by Scart or Yellow, Red & White leads can be recorded onto your PC. DVDs you produce will play back in any DVD player, providing you use DVD-R or DVD+R media and not rewritables. Here's a PDF Guide showing you how to connect everything together correctly.

We've tested the kit with a wide variety of laptop & desktop PCs running Windows 7, Vista and XP. If your PC is less than five years old, it will be powerful enough to run our kit. Read the pre-purchase FAQ page if you're still running XP and aren't quite sure if your PC will be powerful enough.

Frequently Asked Questions Q. Do I have to burn the captured videos to DVD? A. No. You can also retrieve the MPEG videos you capture from the 'My Documents/UVS10' folder on the hard drive. Then copy them to a USB stick or external hard drive. Q. Can I convert those MPEG files? A. Yes. We include Handbrake which will convert to the more space efficient MPEG-4 or H.264 formats, for storage in your media library. Q. Will your USB hardware give the best possible result? A. It really will. We use the latest chipsets with the best video & audio reproduction. Q. I lost my Camcorder's AV (TV) lead, can I still use your kit? A. You'll need this lead to use our kit. Email tim@trcomputers.co.uk with your make & model and we'll find you a compatible lead for around £5 on eBay. If you have a faulty VHS-C camcorder you could use a VHS-C to VHS adapter instead. Q. Does it happen in real time? How long does it take to get one hour of video onto a DVD? A. Yes. Capturing 1 hour of video takes 60 minutes. Authoring (only needed for making DVDs) takes another 60 minutes, on a fast PC. Burning to DVD takes 10 minutes. You can fit 3 hours of video on a blank dual-layer 8.5GB DVD+R (26p each here). Q. Does the kit work with all versions of Windows? A. Yes. We've personally tested it with all variations of Windows 7, Vista & XP. Q. How easy is it? A.
